Abstracts & Impressionist-style landscapes by Gayle N. Mandell

A VERSATILE ARTIST, Gayle works out of a studio at her home on Moran Creek, a branch of the Corrotoman River, in Weems on Virginia's Northern Neck.  She works in 2 distinct styles & in different mediums - IMPRESSIONIST-STYLE LANDSCAPES created in conte' crayon &  featuring the bay and its surrounding environs & ABSTRACTS painted on canvas & panel in acrylic & mixed-media.

ARTIST STATEMENT:  Besides being my chosen vocation, art is my passion. Having grown up on Chesapeake Bay I have always been inspired by it and my art allows me to share that sense of calm and wonderment I feel whenever I'm arond the water.  My remembrances evoke coastal landscapes, sunsets, storm-tossed seas, rough river rocks, shells, and wind-tossed sand and sea grass.  My palette replicates colors found in nature - the subtle tones of bleached rock, the reds and golds of a sunset, the purple cast of a shadow and the deep blues and greens of the ocean.  Changes in how light appears, the changing of the seasons & reflections in the water are all elements I try to capture in my work.  I have been called a "colorist" & like to alternate between representational landscapes and abstract works in mixed media, finding that my landscape painting enables me to focus on detail while my abstract work fuels my creativity.
