THE CHESAPEAKE is a body of water about 200 miles long extending from the Susquehanna River southward to the Atlantic Ocean. With more than 150 rivers & streams feeding the bay, its watershed covers 64,299 square miles in the District of Columbia and parts of 6 states, New York, Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland, Virginia and West Virginia. It derives its name from the Algonquin word Chesepiooc, referring to a village at a big river, and is the 7th oldest surviving English place-name in the United States, first used by explorers heading north from the colony at Roanoke into a Chesapeake Bay tributary in 1585. The most widely accepted meaning of the word is “Great Water.”
